A former employee at BioWare has revealed to a BFM TV journalist that Electronic Arts had requested the developer remove a LGBTQ flag from the now-cancelled Mass Effect Universe.
Speaking anonymously, the individual claimed that management was not entirely won over by the upcoming sci-fi RPG, with BioWare’s tradition of inclusive storytelling not helping matters. “I think the video proposals we presented to the new management weren’t convincing,” they state. “Especially since BioWare is known for its inclusive storytelling, which didn’t help to dispel the skepticism.”
The former employee noted a specific flag from the Mass Effect Universe presentation was asked to be removed for “looking too much like the LGBTQIA+ flag”, so as “not to offend.” It’s unknown if BioWare actually went ahead and did as requested, nor was it revealed who actually requested its removal.
EA announced last week that it was closing BioWare as part of a major round of job losses at the company, with Mass Effect Universe being scrapped as a result. Footage of the new game soon surfaced giving us a look at what BioWare had planned for the game, and a former developer at the studio revealed that Mass Effect Universe would have offered “a level of autonomy and choice” that has yet to be achieved by any video game.
