A long-lost Dragon Quest adventure has finally escaped Japan. Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon – Classic HD brings the original Mystery Dungeon spin-off to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC, giving a new generation the chance to discover one of the series’ more unusual adventures.
Originally released in Japan, this classic roguelike puts Torneko in the starring role. He’s not here to save the world, though. He’s a merchant chasing legendary treasure, and getting rich means surviving a dungeon that changes every time he enters it.

A Dungeon That Never Plays The Same Way Twice
Set after the events of DRAGON QUEST IV, Torneko hears rumours of a mysterious dungeon containing treasures nobody has managed to bring home. Naturally, the aspiring weapons merchant decides that sounds like a perfectly sensible place to visit.
The Mystery Dungeon is randomly generated, with its layout, monsters and items changing between expeditions. Every move counts as a turn, and enemies move whenever Torneko does, turning even a simple step into a decision.
Torneko starts each adventure from Level 1, meaning players need to defeat monsters, collect equipment and carefully manage their resources as they venture deeper.
The Catch? You Can Lose Everything
The roguelike formula brings some serious consequences. If Torneko falls in battle, the equipment and items collected during that expedition are lost.
Successfully escaping with your loot, however, allows Torneko to expand his shop. That creates a useful sense of permanent progression, even when every new dungeon run sends him right back to the beginning.
Classic Gameplay With Some Modern Help
Classic HD also adds several features designed to make this old-school adventure a little easier to live with today.
Players can choose from different difficulty options, while Rewind lets you jump back through the action. Quick Save & Load is also available, alongside a Bonus Pack that provides additional rewards after completing a match.
The result is still very much a traditional Mystery Dungeon experience, but with a few concessions for modern players who might not fancy quite so much punishment.
A Dragon Quest Curiosity Worth Discovering
At £19.99 from the Xbox Store, Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon – Classic HD offers Dragon Quest fans something rather different from the usual RPG adventure. Its combination of turn-based dungeon crawling, randomly generated layouts and high-risk treasure hunting could prove particularly appealing to fans of the roguelike genre.
Most importantly, a game that spent decades as a Japan-only curiosity is finally available internationally. Torneko might be looking for the ultimate treasure, but for Dragon Quest fans, simply getting to play this one could be reward enough.
