Solo Leveling Creator Chugong Officially Makes Jinwoo A War God

While Sung Jinwoo started off his journey in Solo Leveling as a weak Hunter, after his Awakening to the System in the Double Dungeon, he gained unlimited potential, which led him to become the Shadow Monarch and rise to new heights of strength. Jinwoo achieved all this by being bestowed with Ashborn's power. That said, gaining Ashborn’s power did come with its own downsides.

Ever since Jinwoo received his powers, he and Ashborn have been synchronizing together. While this powered him up, it also meant he was losing his humanity slowly, as revealed through the new Solo Leveling book, “The Art of Solo Leveling,” on August 25, 2026. Ashborn, being a war weapon, is what caused Jinwoo's degradation of emotions. However, as we all know, Jinwoo's slow loss of emotion did not eventually lead to much, and the whole concept was somewhat discarded by Chugong by the end of the story. At the end of it all, Jinwoo was able to acquire the powers of a Weapon of War.

The Art of Solo Leveling Reveals Jinwoo And Ashborn’s Synchronization

Sung Jinwoo is the main character of Solo Leveling, and we follow him on his journey from weakest to strongest across Chugong's novel, which was later adapted into a manhwa by Redice Studio. For a big chunk of the story, Jinwoo's powers were a mystery. He unlocked a mysterious System after almost dying in the Double Dungeon, and this System gave him some interesting abilities based on video game mechanics, like leveling up. Eventually, it also led him to acquire the title of Shadow Monarch, which in turn allowed him to extract Shadows from the dead and create a legion of his own. While the Solo Leveling story ended in 2018, we have just gotten new information directly from Chugong via the release of Solo Leveling's new art book, known as “The Art of Solo Leveling,” released on August 25, 2026, in honor of the late DUBU, the legendary artist behind the Solo Leveling manhwa.

Through this release, we have finally received new information concerning the relationship between Jinwoo and Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch of Solo Leveling. Chugong reveals that Jinwoo and Ashborn were actually synchronizing all along. Because of that, Ashborn's personality and powers were being imprinted on Jinwoo.

In retrospect, this makes sense, as we learn later on in Solo Leveling that Jinwoo was supposed to become Ashborn's vessel, into whom he wanted to incarnate to regain his full strength. Obviously, as we know, Ashborn's plans changed. He decided to betray the Architect during the Return to the Double Dungeon arc and let go of Jinwoo as his vessel. Instead, he granted Jinwoo his full powers, allowing him to become the true Shadow Monarch instead.

War Weapon Ashborn Made Jinwoo Colder But Powered Him Up

With the new tidbits of information from The Art of Solo Leveling, we were shown the secret bond between Ashborn and Jinwoo that was slowly building up even before we knew of Ashborn's full existence. The two synchronizing came with its perks for Jinwoo, which included the power of the System and that of the Shadow Monarch. Ashborn granted Jinwoo a wide array of abilities that took him from the level of an E-Rank Hunter to that of a Godly being by the end of the story. Without him, Jinwoo’s journey would’ve been impossible, and he would have met a quick end. As the new Shadow Monarch, abilities like Shadow Extraction were bestowed upon him. However, all this was only the beginning for Sung Jinwoo. In the Return to the Double Dungeon arc, which is set to be animated in Solo Leveling: Beyond the System movie, Ashborn gives Jinwoo the Black Heart, which fuels him to the next level and grants him near-infinite mana reserves.

Furthermore, in the Monarchs War arc, which should be the next installment after Beyond the System, we see Ashborn return with his last gift to Jinwoo. Jinwoo officially becomes the True Shadow Monarch, bestowed with all of Ashborn's powers and even his Shadows, which include Bellion, his only Grand Marshal Shadow and the leader of his legion.

With that being said, synchronizing with Ashborn came with its own downsides. These negatives have now been confirmed by the author of the series himself. Chugong reveals in The Art of Solo Leveling that, by synchronizing with Ashborn and growing stronger, Jinwoo was slowly losing his emotions. For years, fans wondered why becoming stronger made Jinwoo less human, but now we have our answer. Ashborn was slowly being imprinted upon him the stronger he got, making him a weapon of war. A weapon of war has no emotions and simply thinks of bringing forth destruction and taking down enemies. In other words, through the synchronization, Jinwoo was made into a war weapon. He gets stronger, but he is also emotionless.

Jinwoo’s Loss of Humanity Never Received The Attention It Deserves In Solo Leveling

At the beginning of Solo Leveling, Jinwoo's change of personality following the acquisition of the System was clear to see. Fans largely assumed that this plotline would eventually lead to something bigger. Getting stronger seemed to come at a huge cost that Jinwoo would, one day, have to come face-to-face with. By the end of the series, we believed he would've paid a huge price and become a shell of his former self, completely devoid of emotion. However, the truth is that Jinwoo's loss of humanity is a discarded idea that was never really explored by Chugong.

The story implies that the more Jinwoo grows in power, the less emotional he is. That isn't exactly seen in full action. At first, Jinwoo seems to display fewer emotions, becoming calmer and more cool-headed, and leaving behind his more quirky demeanor. However, that is about it. With more time, his original personality is still maintained and does not change much. By the end of Solo Leveling, he even ends up getting married and having his own child, living a very happy life full of vibrant emotions.

For someone supposedly completely emotionless and having attained god power, it should be impossible to display love and affection, but that definitely isn't the case here. He still cares deeply for his friends and family despite everything, which is why he even undertook a 27-year-long war to save everyone. At the very least, Chugong himself expresses that he should have focused on Jinwoo’s emotional loss better in the art book. Had he done that, Jinwoo’s ending could’ve turned out very different from what we have today.
