There are dungeon crawlers, there are survival adventures, and then there’s PIT OF GOBLIN, where your biggest concern might be whether your fellow goblins are going to help you survive or simply leave you to become monster food.

This grubby co-op extraction adventure has arrived on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation, with Xbox Play Anywhere support and a £6.99 price tag on the Xbox Store. Better still, it’s launching day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and PC tiers.

Published and developed by Friendly Foe, PIT OF GOBLIN sends players into a collection of dangerous underground locations to scavenge food and valuables for the insatiable King Queen. It’s a thankless job, naturally, but somebody has to keep that enormous appetite satisfied.

Six Goblins Enter The Pit. How Many Come Back?

PIT OF GOBLIN is designed around online cooperative play for between two and six players, although you can venture into the depths alone if you fancy making life particularly difficult. Randomised dungeons, secret rooms, spooky ruins and dangerous creatures ensure every expedition has its own problems to throw at you.

You’ll need to search for food and other valuable loot, dodge traps, fight off monsters and, most importantly, make it back out alive. Goblins can sprint, jump and cram their limited pockets with whatever they can find, although larger objects require both hands. Food isn’t simply something to collect, either. Certain items can provide useful buffs, while others can be thrown at enemies as weapons or distractions.

And then there’s the small matter of your friends. Proximity voice chat encourages communication as you explore, but with friendly fire, magical spells and plenty of opportunities for mischief, there’s nothing stopping a supposedly helpful teammate from making a bad situation considerably worse.

Feed The King Queen Or Become The Next Meal

The whole expedition revolves around keeping the King Queen happy. Deliver enough food and you’ll be sent back into the Pit for another run, although the royal appetite grows with every successful offering. That means you’ll need to decide whether to hand over everything you find, eat some supplies to restore stamina, or sell valuable loot to prepare for the next descent.

From there, the goblin village provides somewhere to spend your hard-earned coins, with the merchant offering useful equipment such as torches, magical lanterns and armour. There’s also a curio shop selling special communication stones, while further expeditions offer the chance to improve your gear and discover new biomes.

The deeper you travel, the greater the rewards become, but so do the dangers. Sometimes the sensible option is to turn around and escape with what you’ve got. Whether your fellow goblins agree is another matter entirely.

Two Years Of Goblin Mischief

PIT OF GOBLIN arrives after a lengthy period in Steam Early Access, where it has earned Very Positive user reviews. Developed by a four-person team at Swedish indie studio Friendly Foe, the game has received more than 20 updates since its Early Access debut in December 2024.

Those updates have been shaped by community feedback, bringing new dungeons, enemies, weapons, magic and plenty of additional ways to get into trouble. Friendly Foe also plans to continue supporting the game following its full launch.

With six-player co-op, extraction-based survival and an increasingly demanding royal stomach to keep fed, PIT OF GOBLIN looks like a rather entertaining way to ruin a perfectly good evening with friends. Just remember that the goblin who insists on keeping all the loot might not be the one who makes it home.

You’ll find PIT OF GOBLIN on the usual stores, like that of the Xbox Store, right now.
