Seolhwa Dungeon: Roguelike RPG Launches on Mobile

Seolhwa Dungeon: Roguelike RPG is out on Android and iOS. It’s based on Korean folklore, which the game has made into a turn-based dungeon crawler. The game comes from solo developer Sungki Soft, also listed alongside Magic Puncher Games.

Take Jeoseung Saja, the grim reaper who shows up in Seolhwa Dungeon: Roguelike RPG. He calls your name once for every turn he can see you, and when he reaches the third call, you’re the one who’s gone.

Other encounters work in similarly unpredictable ways. The Imugi serpent can transform into a dragon if you let a fight drag on for too long, flooding the entire floor once the transformation happens.

If you run into a funeral procession, you can choose to step aside and bow or block its path, with different consequences depending on your decision. You might also end up wrestling a dokkaebi or accepting a meal from the snail maiden.

Seolhwa Dungeon: Roguelike RPG is split between four main dungeons and seven branch dungeons

Your journey can take you through a silver mine where goblin fire drifts around. Or a royal tomb where the coffins have already been opened. You also see a marsh covered in ankle-deep fog and a fox den where an extra shadow might be following you. The fox den draws from the gumiho, the mythical nine-tailed fox.

As you’d expect from a roguelike, dying means starting over from the first floor. A run can last anywhere from 40 minutes to two hours, depending on how things play out.

Seolhwa Dungeon: Roguelike RPG features 14 species and 12 classes, including options such as bear-folk, serpents, dokkaebi, dol hareubang and crows. Classes include warriors, assassins, Taoists, shamans, geomancers and jesters. You can also seek the favour of eight gods: Sanshin, the Dragon King, Samsin Halmi, the Seven Stars, Princess Bari, Jowang, the Dokkaebi Chief and Mago Halmi.

Magic follows a card-based system, with you choosing one spell at each level from whatever gets drawn. There are 32 spells in total, including Flame Hand, Thunderbolt, Cloud Ride and Diamond Body.
