Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon gets a surprise remaster, out now

Last night’s Nintendo Direct was home to a host of massive announcements — like Metroid Ravenous, Kirby and the World Beyond, and viral mega hit Meccha Chameleon. But nestled among the big announcements was a smaller announcement of great historical importance: a remaster of the first ever Mystery Dungeon game.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- (thank Square Enix for the lengthy title) is a remaster of the 1993 roguelike game commonly called Torneko’s Great Adventure or Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon. As the newly updated name suggests, it’s a spinoff of the Dragon Quest series, being spun off from Dragon Quest 4 and featuring Torneko from that game.

It’s actually the first ever Dragon Quest spinoff, and the first ever Mystery Dungeon game, and saw great success that ultimately led to its own standalone series in Shiren the Wanderer. It also spawned its own spinoffs, including Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon and, yes, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. The original game sadly never released outside of Japan, until today.

The remaster features a new widescreen perspective, a full English translation (of course), and even some modern quality of life additions like difficulty settings. Check out the trailer below.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko‘s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is available digitally on both Switch and Switch 2 (though they’re separate purchases with no save transfer) right now, and it’ll set you back $37.95.
